Moonlight Benjamin was born in Port-au-Prince in 1971 to Vodou parents. Her mother died in childbirth; she was raised in an orphanage where she absorbed gospel music through the church. As a teenager she began recording as a backing singer in Haiti, eventually feeling compelled to explore her ancestral Vodou roots.
